MAXIMIZE WARMTH
Underwear is a not dirty word here at Gord's it's THE word. No $500 jacket can keep you as warm on its own as it could be with the right underwear... Nothing can beat the feeling of being warm and dry no matter what the activity... and that's what the right underwear will do for you. It's all about moisture management, it's all about creating a microclimate of warm dry air next to your skin.

We carry the very best brands in underwear including the two most respected names in keeping people warm: Patagonia and SmartWool. Drop by either of our two locations, let us show you how the right way to underlayer for the very best outside experience!

Everyone here at Gord's uses performance next-to-skin underwear so we're uniquely qualified to extol the virtues of the right stuff next to your skin. Some of us, like some of you, needed to be convinced, but rest assured, we're all converts now. Proof positive: None of us could fathom going out on for a day on the slopes or even outside for some XC action without the thermal benefits of the right insulation that the right technical underwear from both Patagonia and Smartwool afford. Go ahead, evolve. Get with the program, if you're still using cotton underwear you're missing out.

We recently asked our staff a simple question: "why should one use Patagonia or Smartwool underwear?" here's what they replied:

Jana wrote: "Patagonia and SmartWool long underwear keep you dry and therefore warm in the winter season.  It's wicking qualities pull the sweat away from your body to the outer surface of the material...thus keeping you dry and feeling warm.  In contrast, (less desireable) cotton absorbs sweat from your skin and stays wet next to skin...making you feel wet and cold! Patagonia and SmartWool underwear come in a variety of weights to suit the activity you will be doing, and they can be layered on top of one another to create an internal, comfortable, environment for your body and clothing."

JL wrote: "It's all about wicking that moisture away from the skin. The days of wearing super bulky layers to keep warm are gone. It's all about surprisingly warm, thin layers. Hooray for having a range of motion! "

Carolyn wrote: "Everyone should use Patagonia or Smart Wool underwear because of these two reasons: 1. They keep you dry 2. They keep you warm. So if you're a person who thinks that they need to be warm and dry this winter...you should definitely pick up a set. They'll last you FOREVER! (well, almost forever)"

Marc wrote: "Patagonia or Smartwool underwear should be a part of every outdoor person's wardrobe. The key to staying warm, comfortable and dry starts with the proper base layer pieces. Both of these companies make phenomenal base layers. There are different levels, and you choose one depending on temperature and activity level. The purpose of these base layers is to wick moisture away from your body. As you sweat, the material draws the moisture away from your skin and allows it to evaporate. This in turn keeps you dry which then keeps you warm. If you plan on spending time outdoors this winter, invest in some Patagonia or Smartwool underwear."

Alan wrote: "Patagonia and SmartWool will keep you warm and dry, they are both designed with material that is long lasting, they'll both wick moisture away easily and they are bothavailable in different weights for different people, usages and climates.  Cool fact: Both companies make their offerings out of renewable resources, whether its merino wool or (in the case of patagonia) recycled plastic!"

RT wrote: "You should always wear Patagonia or smartwool underwear because every other underwear is made of cotton, cotton is BAD! Although cotton may feel comfortable, it has the disadvantageous feature of being a lot like a sponge and absorbing your sweat. Patagonia and smartwool underwear will wick away your sweat, pulling it away from your body and into your next layer (your jacket for example) witch then wicks it outside so that it can evaporate therefore, keeping you nice and dry! And dry = warm. "

Aaron Wrote: "I use Patagonia and smart-wool underwear because they are very practical for our weather conditions. They are nice and light, and very warm when they need to be, and are very comfortable. They keep the sweat off your body to keep you drier and warmer. A must have for winter sports."

Greg wrote: "Cause they give you that warm and fuzzy feeling, Dude."

Jason wrote: "If you’re doing any kind of athletic activity in the winter, or even in the fall or spring, a base layer is a necessity.  Nothing will keep you dryer or more comfortable during those outdoor activities.  Face it, cotton just doesn’t have the sweat wicking power or breathability that the Patagonia Capilene base layers do.  If you haven’t already tried it, do so – you’ll be very glad you did."

Krista wrote: "Patagonia and Smartwool make great underwear everyone needs to stay warm and DRY. They offer a variety of weights and styles for every purpose. Most of the tops can also be used as every day clothing which makes it incredibly versatile, its not just underwear! Some pieces can be worn 12 months of the year, what value! Remember: Capeline doesn't shrink and is quite durable so it can last for many years!"

LADIES & GENTLEMEN, FIT IS KEY

Leanne, [one of our clothing gurus] wrote this little blurb: From goggles, helmets, jackets or gloves. It's always about the fit. Half of being comfy is having a well fitting garment. Ski/board clothing is no exception. One of my pet peeves is trying to sell a piece of clothing to someone and them not try it on. Never assume that a medium will fit you because you always wear a medium. All companies sizing charts are slightly different. Example: Descente makes some great Snowboarding pants, yet for the life of me I can't seem to get one leg into a large, but an Orage pant in large: I swim in. The key is trying on and seeing what feels great. There's nothing worse than feeling stuffed into your jacket or you have to ski with the top button of your pants undone. See sometimes Bigger IS better...

THE RIGHT
TOQUE

We carry the WARMEST most comfortable toques, hats, beanies, helmets and balaclava's anywhere. Everything to keep your head nice and comfy and your ears nice and toasty. Nothing beats the right toque to tie an outfit together, to make that look JUST right. But don;t stop there, we have the scarf you've been dreaming about too! It's all the little things that make all the difference and it's ok, we understand.

THENORTHFACE
REDPOINT

It's no coincidence that most everyone on staff at Gord's owns one. This is the ultimate Fleece replacement... and save for the Patagonia "down sweater" (equally wonderful) there's no one piece of gear we can all agree we would not want to do without in our respective cold-fighting arsenals. Click on the following link and let us tell you why you need, at the very least, one of these FABULOUS garments:

THE THING ABOUT BIKE SHORTS

One article of clothing that you absolutely do not want to skimp on are bike shorts. Invest in a trusted name brand with a quality chamois and your lower region will thank you later in the ride. We made a decision a few years ago to stay away from the cheap bike shorts, one would almost be better of without shorts than to wear cheap ones. The good stuff keeps your nether-regions dry, slightly padded and cool. For those not quite ready for the full spandex short look, we offer a wide variety of baggy shorts that do the job yet do without the painted-on look. Some love the tight fitting shorts because of the low friction and the non-snagging design... Both are good. Brands we love: Sugoi and Pearl Izumi arguably make the best shorts out there but we've found some awfuly nice stuff from Oakley, Fox, Descente and DNA. Whatever the short you end up with you'll thank us for insisting. Your rides will last longer and best of all, your mood will be better

THE RIDE
We've said it before: It's all about the ride. The ride to Seven Eleven, the ride to your buddies house, the ride we call Ingolf, the ride at Panorama, Fernie, The Seine River, the ride through the monkey trails at Assiniboine Park, the ride with your 30 favorite buddies or the ride with your daughter.

Yes the bike is important. But more important than the bike is the smile on your face. So get off your butt, dust off your bike, throw on your helmet and come riding with us next season! For more information on how we can help ge
